As anyone has probably noticed, the site has changed quite a bit just recently. This is due to moving to a new server and that forcing the use of different software for running SharedWriting.
The major differences are: story submissions are automatically posted to their category/board, no voting required; users have to go to the board/category to find the "New Story" submission link; user diaries are now 'blogs'; front page stories are selected by the admins rather than voting; and existing user passwords had to be reset. Details below.
Details:
story submissions are automatically posted to their category/board, no voting required: the old software required registered users to vote on all non-diary submissions before they could be posted. This new software does not have that restriction. Stories will automatically be posted into their category/board and shown in the "new" list on the frontpage. The voting in the previous software was always a kind of roadblock since it did not seem that many users accepted the responsibility of voting on other people's submissions.
users have to go to the board/category to find the 'Add Story' submission link: Instead of there being a submission link on each page users will have to click on the 'All Stories' link, then click into the category they wish to submit a story in and then click on 'Add Story' link to get the submission form. This does require more links for you to be able to submit your stories, but I believe this is more than off set by the automatic posting.
user diaries are now 'blogs': This new software has a blog feature as opposed to a diary one. They are basically the same concept, just different names and implementations. New diary entries are not currently posted to the front page as with the old software, but new entries are noted to users on pages other than the front page.
front page stories are selected by the admins rather than voting: The old software determined what stories where section vs front page stories based on the positive vote options for accepting submissions. As noted above, the new software does NOT require voting any more. So front page stories will now be by admin selection. New stories will have their title displayed on the front page automatically, its just the stories that have their summary (or first few lines) displayed as well will be selected instead of voted on or automatic.
existing user passwords had to be reset: Sorry folks, but the two softwares use completely incompatibile encryption setups for passwords in the database. It was not possible for me to transfer over user passwords in the migration. To get your password reset use the lost password part of the login form. That will send an email to the address registered for your account with a URL that will allow you to reset your password. I am very sorry for the inconvience, but I could not find a way around it.
